Horn recommendation

What would you recommend as a horn for some GPA 390 drivers? (1.4" throat)
I need them to run from 400 to 7K.

Yes, I like the look of those 1003's & looks like they would work out to be about $1000 a pair....pretty much the same as the MR94B's.

I say the 94B's as the info sent by GM tells me that the dispersion of the other Mantaray horns seems to be very limited....wouldn't this give a beamy sound?

What would you guys go for?....the 1003's or the MR94B's? Would they sound the same or is it a matter of dispersion characteristics?

I'd go with the multi-cell, that's my personal preference. I have a pair of 803s that I like a lot, but I like the 1005s even better.

The 300Hz horns are big, don't forget that. They also tend to have a larger midrange hump than the 500Hz multi-cell so you'll have to deal with that in EQ or crossover. $1000 for a pair of 1003 seems on the high side, as the 300Hz horns are usually less sought after. But it's whatever the market will bear. Over the past few years on eBay the 500Hz multi-cell have sold for about $50 a cell. The 300Hz horns $30 or less per cell. I think I paid $25 a cell for mine, with throats.

I'm sure there are others who prefer the other style horns. I just have a love for the big, wide open sound of the multi-cells.

BTW, what are you using for tweeters? Gotta be pretty serious.

IMHO there is no better mid horn than the multicell. The others may have advantages for full range.

My Favorites are the Multi's too. They are quite large though.If you have the room I say go for it. My 1005A's tar filled's are my favorites at the moment.When i finnish my project I may have a new Fav.511E time will tell.

I never really liked the 803 Multi much though.I always thought the 311-90 sounded better IMO.Could have been the XO,amps,etc....so not a valid point as I didn't listen to them A & B'd on the same sytem.

But you gotta love the Big Altec multi-cells bigger the better and the tar-filleds are the best sounding IMHO :2thumbsup:

Kind of hard to recommend a specific horn when you don't define the app..........

Well, 'beamy' is relative in that if it fits the needs of the app it's just right, but in a typical HIFI app 60x60 works well as does 40-80 to 90. For longer listening distances then, narrower is better, ergo wider is better for sitting closer in smaller rooms or for many HT apps.

My application is for home hi-fi music listening. My room is 9m x 6m x 2.7m high. I usually sit about 6 m from the speakers with the speakers placed on the 6m wall.
After hearing further comments I felt that the 1003's may be too large for this size room, what I mean is that I might not get the best from them in a room this size, plus there is the huge shipping cost involved. I like the look of the 311's in terms of overall size & they will obviously handle the 400 Hz crossover with ease.
